How to update the WLED LED controller firmware

First flash: use the web installer at install.wled.me over USB from a Chromium browser.
Already running WLED: Config, then Security & Updates, then Manual OTA Update, then upload the .bin for your board.
Match the binary to your board (ESP8266 vs ESP32) — the wrong one bricks it until you re-flash over USB.
